If you are a football fan, then you have probably heard about the Great Debate that is happening for the NFL Draft.  Who is your number 1 pick, Robert Griffin III or Andrew Luck?

Most draft gurus still think it is going to be Luck, but after RG3’s combine workout, the second place winner is not going to be too disappointed.

I thought that his 40 time was pretty impressive, a 4.41 officially.  I’ve even created a real short video showing his 40 time and what he did correctly.

I also was able to find a video that shows Robert Griffin III’s run simulcast with the last three Heisman trophy winners: Cam Newton, Mark Ingram, and Tim Tebow.  It is a pretty cool watch.  It really illustrates the separation that can be made with just a .1 or .2 of a second difference.

RG3 prepared for the combine workout at the famed Athlete’s Performance.  I’m not sure which one he was at though.  There are several throughout the U.S., with probably the most famous location in Arizona.

I recall seeing a piece on ESPN of Robert Griffin III prepping for the combine workout there and going through all the motions.  He was lifting weights, doing various sprints, and doing a lot of quarterback work making various throws.  When you are a big-time draft prospect, this is the place to go and you will receive all the attention you need to do your best job at the combine.

At the draft, he only did 3 events – the 40 as stated earlier which was the fastest among all the quarterbacks, the vertical jump of 39 inches (the best among QBs), and the broad jump of 120 inches (which was 3rd best among QBs).  Being a potential number one pick, he chose skip the rest of the drills so he could do them at his own pro day, with his own receivers, and in comfortable surroundings.

The rest of the time he participated in interviews with NFL teams and I guess this was where he really impressed people.  He had a great grasp of various reads that were put in front of him.  He also seems to be a pretty nice kid.

Ultimately, all this did was just wet people’s appetites for this kid to play football in the fall.  He would have really had to screw up his workout to diminish his chances of getting picked high.  But, that 40 really captured peoples’ attention.

I would have loved to have seen him do a pro agility drill.  Very rarely is a quarterback running 40 yards in a straight line.  I understand he’s a fast kid, but the pro agility would have shown his lateral quickness and his ability to change direction fast.  I think this is a more applicable test for him.  How quick can he cut and change direction to avoid the hits and then scramble away.

Nevertheless, he is still going to be a 1 or 2 pick and that ain’t bad.  I’ll be interested to see who gets in that #2 position to snag this kid.  He seems like a good guy and I’ll be rooting for him to succeed.
